Not so festive season

So, today is the final day of the holidays and another festive season draws to a close.  We’ve certainly had an interesting, although not entirely optimal, couple of weeks…

The build up to Christmas was lots of fun.  Alex spent his days with Jacqui at various Christmas parties and even met Santa Claus for the first time!  He enjoyed helping us choosing and decorating our Christmas tree (strategically chosen to sit on top of a table so Alex couldn’t reach all the decorations!).  A highlight of every day is the switching on of our lights!!

We finally found a hat that would stay on his head – although I think it makes him look Mongolian!

Little Mongolian child

It does come in handy when we’re taking him out and about!  Matt took him to his very first sports class – trying out “Baby Booters”, a football club for toddlers!  I’m very proud to say that Alex scored a goal in his very first session.  Here he is forgetting that he isn’t supposed to handle the ball (I’m sure he’s a rugby player at heart…)

At baby booters!

We spent a lovely family Christmas Eve chilling out at home, watching festive movies and sorting out presents, Alex ending up with an outrageously massive pile of gifts!  We also packed up our overnight bags and wrapped all the presents we have for family as we were due to spend Christmas Day and Boxing Day with family in Surrey and Berkshire.  Here’s Alex and his Christmas tree:

Camera Roll-784

Sadly, Alex woke up on Christmas Day sick as a parrot!  So we ended up spending most of the Christmas week stuck in Herne Hill, doing lots of laundry and trying to entertain a surprisingly active sick child! He got some fabulous presents (thanks everyone), so we spend plenty of time playing with Alex’s new duplo, brio railway, various musical instruments and many different vehicles!!  Thanks everyone!

As we’d been due to be away, we didn’t have food in the house, so Matt and I enjoyed beans on toast for Christmas lunch – and I’m sad to say we haven’t had any turkey at all this year.  For four days we restricted excursions to the park across the road and some thrilling trips to Sainsbury’s, but thankfully Alex recovered relatively quickly and we were able to do what we’d intended and see some of London.

We had a great trip to the Aquarium on the Southbank.  It was incredibly busy, but we were really impressed with how much is on show.  Alex particularly liked the glass tunnel through the shark tank, although his very favourite thing in the place was the plastic igloo tunnel which played Christmas music and was filled with twinkly little lights.  Took us a lot of persuading to coax him out of that!!

At London Sealife Centre

Whilst on the Southbank, Alex went on his very first merry-go-round with Matt,  and ate South American food for lunch.  All in all, a pretty adventurous day!!

We also enjoyed visits from our friends Jo P and Katharine – and went on a group trip to London Zoo where Alex enjoyed all the monkeys and we loved seeing the lions and their gorgeous cubs!  I’d never been before, and it was a fabulous place – so compact and accessible, and fabulous for children.  I think Alex will love it in a few months, so we’ll definitely be back in the Summer.  We also took the opportunity of stopping by the incredible lego Christmas tree at St Pancras station – so amazing.  Made me want to be a lego builder!!

On New Year’s Day, we had a bit of a disastrous excursion to Dulwich Woods for a family walk.  We were completely unprepared for the huge amount of mud and steep terrain, so the “walk” lasted about 5 minutes and involved tantrums from all three of us!  But Alex did get to wear his new red wellies for the first time, although he wasn’t that keen.

Yesterday was more successful as we revisited one of Alex’s favourite places – the Science Museum where he went crazy pointing out all the trains in the industry galleries before going wild in the basement kids area!  Here are a couple of pictures we took yesterday of a particularly happy Alex – so cute and smiley!

Happy in Giraffe

and my favourite picture of recent weeks (this is his new comedy smile!):

New smile!

In other news, his repertoire of words is ever increasing, with the latest additions being:

  • Choo choo (his current favourite)
  • Nana (banana)
  • Tree (mostly relating to Christmas trees, so not sure this will continue after twelth night)
  • Juice
  • Shoes

Fairgrounds, farms and first words

We’ve been feeling bad for not posting for a while – but to be honest, I’m not that sorry as we’ve been having so much fun we haven’t had time!!

It’s hard to know here to start as we’ve been packing lots into our weekends. We’ve been out and about in London, checking out Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park with Alex’s Uncle Richard, Auntie Margaret and his cousins Thomas and Edward.  It was incredibly busy, very tacky and pretty expensive – but the children loved it! Alex went on his very first fairground rides, trying out some spinning tea cups and the Big Wheel.  He wasn’t much of a fan of the tea cups, but loved pressing his face against the window and door of the Big Wheel capsule (which freaked me out immensely as I watched from the ground – it went really quite high!).  Here he is with his daddy on the tea cup before he started screaming!

And checking out the Serpentine ducks:

Last weekend, we visited the Science Museum again – this time heading down to the basement area which is designed for little children.   I can’t believe we haven’t discovered it before – it was heaven for Alex.  Packed full of sensory toys and experiences, Alex enjoyed funny mirrors, tactile wall coverings and best of all, lots and lots of water!  He got completely soaked, despite the waterproof tabards.  Here he is getting stuck in:

Camera Roll-763

We also made a quick visit to Deen City Farm – we’ve visited a couple of times before and Alex wasn’t particularly interested in the animals, but this time he went crazy for the chickens and turkeys. His favourite thing there was one of the tacky rides – here he is hard at work:

Hard at work at Deen City Farm

With the days being so short, we’ve been struggling a bit to entertain Alex in the late afternoon, but last weekend we discovered that Crystal Palace have a family swimming session that perfectly fills the slot between nap and dinner. Alex seems to adore being in the water and he giggled and splashed his way around the pool doing a fabulous job of kicking.  We’ll certainly try and get there most weekends now that our swimming classes have finished.

Besides all those exciting trips, we’ve enjoyed some lovely family meals out.  Alex is getting much better at sitting in a high chair in restaurants, and is beginning to get the hang of cutlery.  Last weekend he had a mini roast meal for Sunday Lunch in our local pub which was great, and he’s getting more international by trying Mexican food at Wholefoods last weekend 🙂  One amusing eating habit he is developing is a love hate relationship with ice cream.  He knows he likes the flavour, but that doesn’t stop him wincing and pulling the funniest faces at the cold as he puts it in his mouth!

Camera Roll-752

He’s getting on so well with his childminder – he’s really social and confident.  It’s really noticeable when he’s with us – he’s started saying “hiya” and waving at strangers every where we go, resulting in embarrassed people who feel obliged to return the greeting!!  Very cute.  He’s chatting more and more, with his current repertoire of words including:

  • Mama
  • Dada
  • Yeah
  • Bye Bye
  • Hiya
  • Duck
  • Up there – in relation to planes flying over (apparently he even said “aeroplane” yesterday, but I’m not convinced!)
  • Get down – whenever he seems his childminder’s puppy
  • Mine – whenever his childminer holds another baby (referring to her)

He’s growing up!

Weekend fun

It’s been a pretty quiet November so far with no visitors or weekend obligations – so we’ve been trying to get out and about as a family and check out some local attractions.

We headed out to Westfield Stratford City a couple of Sundays ago for a spot of shopping and sightseeing.  It was exhilarating seeing the Olympic Park looking so close to completion – the stadium looks incredible and the torch is enormous!  Felt really quite excited at the prospect of 2012 (and even more so now we managed to get tickets to some of the warm up events in the new year).  Alex was on great form and coped well with being dragged around multiple shops.  He did insist on walking a lot, which was great for him but certainly slowed the purchasing (probably a good thing!).  He had a massive lunch in Giraffe and absolutely loved playing in the little area for toddlers – he insisted on playing on everything.

At the Olympic Park

Last weekend, we headed up to London on a couple of little expeditions.  On Saturday we braved the King’s Road (mostly so Matt could eat his fill at the little farmers market there and I could buy a Cath Kidston case for my lovely new iPhone 4S) – but I think Alex enjoyed the bustle of the city.  He certainly liked the Peter Jones Christmas lights!

On the Sunday we did something much more fun for him and headed to South Kensington and the museums.  We started at the Natural History Museum where we visited the Wildlife Photographer of the Year expedition.  Alex loves looking at pictures, so we hoped he’d enjoy the exhibition – but instead he prefered to run around the dark room, resulting in Matt and I crawling around after him around people’s feet.  Pretty embarrassing, but quite amusing!  We wisely chose to get out of there quickly, and moved on to the Science Museum where Alex loved the LaunchPad and Listening Post.  We’ll definitely be back there soon.

Today we’ve had a fabulous day at Godstone Farm in Surrey with friends. In the news a couple of years ago because of a major E.coli outbreak, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect!  But it turned out to be a brilliant place – we easily spent a few hours meeting a range of animals, exploring the nature trail, playing in the soft play barn and eating a huge lunch.  Alex LOVED it.  Here he is meeting some guinea pigs:

And here’s Matt with Alex and Henry before the tackle the slides:

So we’ve had a lovely few weekends, punctuated with loads of playing in the Autumn leaves in our local park.  We’ve put quite a few pictures on Flickr of park time, but here’s my favourite of Alex running through the leaves:

Autumn days

Just found this in my drafts – obviously forgot to post it last weekend.  So here’s a very late update – with more to follow tomorrow hopefully!

* * * * * *

Sorry we haven’t posted for a while – it’s been a quiet couple of weeks.  Alex has his MMR injection, and another couple of jabs at the end of October and has been a bit grumpy for the past few days.  But thankfully he seems back to his jolly self today and we’ve had a wonderful family Saturday together.

Just thought I’d share a few quick pics from the last fortnight.  Here’s Alex in a comedy hat chatting to his friend Freddie in Brockwell Park:

Alex and Freddie

We survived the clocks changing without too much early morning trauma and we’re all enjoying the Autumn.  Alex likes ripping the leaves apart and trying to eat them, and today had his first experience of running around and kicking all the fallen leaves.  Here’s a blurry pic of him stamping on the leaves:

Kicking the Autumn leaves

We’ve been out at a local fireworks display this evening.  Alex was allowed to stay up a little bit later to see his first proper display, and I think he was impressed.  He wasn’t sure at the start, but seemed to enjoy it – and certainly clapped a lot at the end of the show!  He’s sleeping now and I’m keeping everything crossed that the many other local shows don’t wake him up!  Here he is all wrapped up and ready to go this evening (and yes, I’m still trying to get him to wear the silly hat – without much success!)

Ready for fireworks

Matt enjoyed 24 hours in sole charge of Alex last week as I popped down to Southampton to visit Katharine and see Sweeney Todd at the Chichester Festival.  Was a fabulous break packed with chatting and much fun – although I wasn’t able to make the most of a potential lie in as I was on a 7am train back to London to make it in for work the following day!

In other non-Alex related news, our potential housemove is progressing.  We’ve accepted an offer on our house, and excitingly have had an offer accepted on the house we fell in love with in Herne Hill.  Surveys are taking place next week – so keep everything crossed our buyers don’t pull out!  Still to nervous to post photographs, but when it’s looking more likely, I’ll share some…

Back to our Rootes

Agar family outside RootesJust a quick post as I have to mention that on the way home from North Wales, and before stopping in on our friend Tracy for dinner and bathtime (thanks!), we did a whistle stop tour of the University of Warwick campus.  For those of you who don’t know, Matt and I both studied at Warwick in the 1990s and met in the sub aqua club in my final year – so it was a bit of a trip down memory lane for both of us!  I hadn’t been back for a decade, so it was quite a shock to see how much things had changed!

Not everything had though, and here’s our little family posing in front of Rootes – the accommodation we both lived in in our first year in 1996.

Much of the campus artwork is still in place, including the TOIL sign oustide our halls:

Alex and I by Rootes

But the Union is completely different, so we enjoyed exploring the new building.  I must admit, I found it really rather surreal wandering around the Union with a pushchair – it didn’t feel quite right!!  Here’s Alex and Matt having a look around:

Matt and Alex in the Union

Loving the bright colours (and high ceilings) in the new space:

My boys in the Union

It was such a good feeling being back on campus – really reminding me of the fun I had and the great friends I made.  I felt really quite nostalgic and a little bit jealous of the current students we saw everywhere.

Just to close, and really for my Warwick mates, here’s Matt and I at Benefactors remembering the WUSAC cocktail party!

90th birthday celebrations

Just in case Alex turning one wasn’t exciting enough, we had a much bigger birthday to celebrate last week.  My Great Aunt Jean turned 90!  As we had done a decade ago to mark her 80th, the family gathered in beautiful Criccieth, North Wales.  But this time, we managed to gather absolutely everyone – my American aunt and cousins flew over, and all the Scottish family travelled South – so my dad’s complete living maternal family.  Sad his mother wasn’t alive to be part of it – she’d have enjoyed the party!

Here’s the entire clan:

The complete Williams/Michael clan

I still find it hard to believe that we literally had the entire part of my family tree in one room together. Fingers crossed we can do it again for her 100th!  I’m so happy Alex was there to be part of it, even though he won’t remember – particularly since my Great Aunt commented to me a couple of years ago that she was sad she was unlikely to get to meet my children!  Here are four generations of the family together:

Four generations

It was a fabulous weekend – the weather was sunny and mild, and with Criccieth in such a stunning coastal location, we took the opportunity to let Alex play at the beach.  He ate a lot of sand:

Here are all the pictures from North Wales:

First birthday party

This will be brief as I’m getting a tad out of date with the blog and need to catch up.  It’s been a very busy couple of weeks – the highlight being our NCT class first birthday party!  Alex is the oldest of the seven boys born to the NCT group we attended in the build up to his birth (we have a ready made Rugby Sevens team!).  Gradually the gang have turned one, and we decided to mark the occasion by having a joint party.

We hired the community centre in Dulwich Park for an afternoon, filled it with balloons, bubbles (both adult and child varieties!) and many toys – and had a fabulous afternoon celebrating.  Sadly, one of Alex’s little friends, Freddie, was sick on party day, so we ended up with six of the seven which was such a shame – fingers crossed we all make it for their second birthday!

Helen (Angus’s mum) made a stunning birthday cake which Alex very much enjoyed (having a tantrum when I wouldn’t let him eat much of it!) – she managed to squeeze on all the names – Alex, Milo, Max, Angus, Freddie, Arlo and Ralph!

Helen's fabulous (and delicious!) cake

We, of course, did the obligatory baby line up – here they are all sitting beautifully:

IMG_5633

Alex spent most of the party running around with his trolley, obviously loving the fact he had a massive room with minimal furniture to get in the way:

IMG_5570

It was a lovely, if exhausting, afternoon – made all the more special by having my mum and Auntie there too!  Just in case you haven’t already spotted them on Twitter, here’s the full set of pics we took of the big day:

Heatwave

I’ve been a very bad blogger and not posted anything for a couple of weeks – sorry about that!  I blame the excessive Autumn heat turning my brain to mush!

We’ve had a good couple of weeks since his birthday.  It’s been fairly quiet, which has been nice considering how stunning the weather has been – leaving plenty of time for lounging in the local park or our garden 🙂  My mum is visiting from the USA, so we had a fun couple of days with her last weekend.  Alex seemed to remember her from her last visit which was great.

This weekend it’s been outrageously hot, so we’ve enjoyed donning our shorts again!  We’ve had lots of fun with our friends Catherine and Charlie, and their children Phoebe and Henry, this weekend – firstly breakfast at the Brockwell Park Lido Cafe, and later a lazy and rather yummy bbq in our garden followed by a trip to the swings.  I think the weather will turn more seasonal in a couple of days, but it’s been really quite enjoyable – if a little surreal – playing in the park with Alex in the evening in temperatures that could be August, as the sun is setting early with autumn leaves on the ground.

Here’s Alex this afternoon having fun in the park this afternoon:

And listening carefully to his friend Phoebe as she pushes him around the local park!

And finally, here’s Alex exploring the park early yeterday evening looking rather naughty:

Camera Roll-705

Probably the most exciting thing that’s happened in the last few days is that we’ve put our house on the market!  We’ve found a gorgeous house in a lovely road nearby that we have our eyes on – if we can find someone to buy this place!  The thought of having to keep the house spotless and tidy is filling me with horror – within minutes of entering a room, Alex has usually trashed it!  So here’s hoping for a quick sale!  Keep your fingers crossed.

Right – time to bed for me, I shall close this post with a little video of alex showing off his new ability to do high fives”…

365 days

I still can’t quite believe it, but I am the mother of a one-year-old!  Alex turned one on 12 September 2011!  Just a reminder – here he is on 12 September 2010:

Camera Roll-67

One year on, we spent a fun morning opening his many presents and playing with them (and of course, predictably, he mostly enjoyed the boxes, ribbon and wrapping paper)

Combining present opening with CBeebies and his new firetruck

We then headed down to Herne Hill, stopping off for Alex’s very first haircut!  He was very well behaved, mostly staying still allowing the hairdresser to remove his developing mullet!  After our weekly Gymboree class of singing, softplay and bubbles we headed home for a big pasta lunch!  Alex then gave me the very best gift ever – a two hour nap, for probably only the first or second time in his life!  Such a treat to put my feet up and have a proper lunch!  I rewarded him with a trip to an adventure playground in East Dulwich.  Sadly our trip coincided with the end of the school day, so it was packed.  But he still enjoyed plenty of cruising around the equipment:

IMG_5470

Once daddy had come home from work, we had a little birthday cake (it is National Cupcake Week after all) – Alex seemed to enjoy his very first cake 🙂  And probably loved the candle even more!

First birthday cake

We’ve continued the celebrations this weekend with visits from Matt’s sister-in-law and nephews this morning, and dad this afternoon.  So Alex was spoiled with even more fabulous presents – a ride on scooter:

Camera Roll-718

And a walker which he’s been using all afternoon (sorry about the dribble!):

Camera Roll-724

I am hoping he quickly learns to turn it because I’m spending a vast amount of time having to turn him around – we don’t have a particularly long house!  I think this wil really help improve his walking.  He’s managing a few steps on his own – but not many, and he’s getting so frustrated and angry at the moment, that I’m hoping he figures it out properly very soon!

In other, non-birthday news – Matt and I had a date afternoon yesterday.  It was our wedding anniversary this week, so we spoiled ourselves with an afternoon off.  Jess came round to play with Alex whilst we headed up to the amazing Southwark Playhouse to see the musical, “Parade“.  The show was incredible – would highly recommend it if you find somewhere doing a run.  We’ve also been contemplating moving house this weekend – have considered it for a while, but spotted a stunning house we’ve fallen in love with after a viewing yesterday, so thinking a bit more realistically now.  Watch this space…

To close – for the picture fans amongst you, here are a few more snaps from Alex’s birthday week:

Lions and tigers and… tropical fish!

We spent a few days down in Wiltshire/Somerset last week with our friend Katharine.  Staying at a lovely By the Byre lodge, we were delighted to find a lovely labrador called Jasper living there.  Alex entertainment sorted 🙂 Here are my boys with the lovely Jasper in the background:

IMG_5446

The lodges shared a big toy and game room, so Alex had a fabulous time selecting a variety of toys (all with wheels) and ride ons (with bigger wheels)  to play with during our stay.  And Matt and Katharine found a suitably tacky jigsaw and random DVDs to occupy the evenings!

Thankfully we went on excursions during the day – including finally making it to Longleat (those of you reading the blog back in March will remember my disappointment at it being closed when we were on our disastrous holiday to Dorset!).  It was worth the wait – we had a truly fabulous day.  It isn’t cheap to get in – but I found it worth every penny.  The safari drive was incredible – Alex was engrossed in the close encounters with wild animals and loved the monkeys climbing on the car (we all loved them until they started pulling apart our windscreen wipers!).  Here’s Alex checking out the Giraffes:

IMG_5384

We spent the afternoon exploring the rest of the park – seeking out some smaller animals including meerkats and anteaters.  Matt and Katharine braved the massive maze and we all enjoyed the huge kid’s play area.  Alex loved exploring the grounds:

Longleat

A really excellent day out – and highly recommended!  Our second day was considerably wetter, so slightly less fun!  We visited a softplay (no holiday is now complete without one), had a delicious pub lunch at The Mill at Rode and then resorted to wandering the damp streets of Bath.  We toured the beautiful Abbey and checked out the Pump Rooms – but I must admit, we were glad to make it back to the snug lodge for the evening

Back in London for the weekend, we popped along to the Horniman Museum Aquarium yesterday for the afternoon.  We’d taken Alex before, but he hadn’t been that interested.  This trip was quite the opposite – he was beside himself with excitement at the tropical fish tank – here’s a video of him making friends with the fish:

We’ve had a quiet August Bank Holiday today – we spent a couple of hours walking around the city which is always fun when the offices are closed and the streets empty, and then met some friends for a chat in Dulwich Park.  I’m now busy packing as I’m off to Manchester for a couple of days to a work conference – my first nights away from Alex.  Eeek – very nervous!

If you want to see more from Longleat – here are all our snaps from our quick trip West:

August in South London

We made it home from the Borders just in time for Matt to have a couple of crazy weekends volunteering for two of the London 2012 Olympic test events.  He spent an incredible amount of time over the weekend of 6/7 August in Hyde Park helping with the triathlon, and spent much of the following weekend in training or standing on a traffic island in Richmond Park waiting for the road race to speed past!

This meant that I had quite a lot of time to fill with Alex on my own!  Thankfully he was in pretty good form, the weather was good and I had some visitors for part of the time – so that made things easier!  The first weekend we were back, Alex and I braved a trip up to Regents Park on our own to go to the Lollibop Festival – an event entirely focused on little people!  It was pretty pricey to get in (luckily Alex was free!) – but it was worth it.  Alex had a blast playing in the softplay and tinyplay tents – and when I could drag him away we did a Gymboree class. We even got to see Cerrie from CBeebies, and danced to ZingZillas and Rastamouse performances.  Hilarious stuff – and a great way to pass a day together.  Here he is playing with some WOW toys – I literally had to drag him away from this table:

Having fun at Lollibop in Regents Park

The next day we stayed local and went out for breakfast together at the Brockwell Park Lido Cafe which was scrummy.  We also went to play with Phoebe and Henry (children of our good friends Charlie & Catherine!).

The following week, we had a final visit from my parents who were about to head back to Michigan.  We enjoyed a pub lunch at The Florence and plenty of time pushing Alex around the park on his trike.  When my parents were visiting, Alex discovered a joy for plane spotting!  We’re under the Heathrow and City Airport flight paths, and Alex now delights in scouring the skies or listening carefully for any hint of a plane – he then points and shouts at it, before waving as the plane passes overhead.  This new hobby is passing the time most days now – what a geek!  Here he is cuddling Grandma before she flies home (not sure if he spotted her plane…)

Camera Roll-657

We had visitors last weekend, with Katharine joining us for a key event – a trip to see In the Night Garden Live in Richmond!  Watching In the Night Garden is a regular part of Alex’s bedtime routine – and I think it blew his mind seeing the life size characters :-). The performance was incredibly well done and the set up was perfect for tiny children – Alex could crawl around wherever he wanted and there was so much going on, he didn’t get bored.  And if that wasn’t exciting enough for him – Richmond is so close to Heathrow that the plane spotting was incredible 😉  Here he is looking skywards:

Plane spotting

Our childminder is on holiday at the moment, so we had our babysitter Jess looking after Alex this week while we’ve been working.  She did a fabulous job entertaining him for the week even though he was a bit under the weather. For nearly 10 days, he went completely off his food (which is unusual for Alex!) – poor Jess spent her week trying to persuade him to eat some toast or pasta.  He’s refusing to be spoonfed – he seems to think he’s grownup enough to feed himself!  Thankfully, he suddenly remembed he was hungry on Friday and is back to eating massive portions of food and making a huge mess.  Here he is looking proud after feeding himself dinner:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/matthewagar/6070071618/in/photostream

The hunger strike seems to have made no difference to his growth – we took him to get weighed today and he’s still on the 98th centile, weighing in at nearly 12kg.

Back to what we’re up to, with Jess, Alex went to a new music class and even did some painting – I now have Alex’s footprints in paint which is so cute!  And Alex has finally discovered our piano – here he is looking quite serious about his new toy:

Starting young

Matt and I are on leave this week, so we’re off on a short break to Somerset on Wednesday – more on that next week.  I think a trip to Longleat is in order! And I’m sure we’ll find another softplay to visit…

Celebrating 60 years

Sorry the blog’s been so quiet recently – it’s been a pretty busy couple of weeks!  As mentioned in my last post, we had a major family celebration to enjoy.  My grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July, so the rest of the family surprised them with a week in the incredible St Cuthbert’s Farmhouse near Coldstream in the Borders (much to my disappointment, the house itself wasn’t in Scotland, but we could see over the Tweed from the house, so we were pretty close!).

We broke the long journey up North with a couple of days in Newcastle visiting our friend Jo who very proudly hosted us in her fabulous new house.  Alex took great pleasure in trying to eat the gravel in her garden, her recycling and all her medical books.  We enjoyed a trip to the seaside just North of Newcastle, a pub lunch and trip to her local excellent playground where Alex found a new love of crawling through tunnels.  Here are my boys on the windswept beach:

Boys on the beach

The excitment of the beach was too much for Alex, who promptly fell asleep (I think soothed by the white noise of the waves and wind!)

Fast asleep in the backpack!

The visit with Jo passed all too quickly, and we were back on the road for the short hop North to the borders.  We stopped on the way at Cragside, a beautiful National Trust estate in Northumberland.  Whereas a year ago, Matt and I would have enjoyed trekking along some of the miles of paths there, we instead headed to the adventure playground for some more tunnel fun:

Tunnel fun

After our little excursion we arrived in Coldstream at the farmhouse.  It was quite a family trip – with Alex getting to spend nearly a week with his parents (obviously!), grandparents, great-grandparents, aunt & uncle and great aunt!  Here is everyone posing together on the last night – still amazed we got Alex to look at the camera:

IMG_5318

The house was beautiful, and to celebrate the big anniversary we had a special (and completely delicious) dinner catered by a local chef. We even had The Queen’s official card to my grandparents on display in the hall for the week!  Highlights of the week were:

  • Alex getting his first trike – an early birthday present from his grandparents.  He loves being pushed along really quickly, especially on bumpy ground
  • Alex’s first trip into Scotland – a monumentus occasion (and I really should have remembered to pop him in his Scotland rugby shirt for the moment!)
  • Visiting a local farm with Alex – he loved stroking the goats and sheep, and particularly enjoyed playing on the toy tractors and having a first go on a bouncy castle
  • The amazing amount of fun Alex can have on a staircase – playing peekaboo through the bannister
  • Checking out the local softplay (no holiday is without that now) – Alnwick had a great softplay centre (as well as a well timed International Music Festival which we all enjoyed)
  • Matt getting to go mountain biking in Peebles – nothing to do with Alex, but something he’s been raving about for days!

Of course, the week wasn’t without challenges (when is travelling with a baby relaxing!).  Alex developed the worst timed separation anxiety ever – so my cunning ploy to leave him at his grandparent’s door at 7am each morning to play with them whilst enjoying a lie in myself was foiled.  It took a few days, but he gradually got used to everyone and ended up having a blast!  He also, very annoyingly, lost his ability to sleep through the night – I guess sleeping in an en suite bathroom (albeit a very large and swanky one) just isn’t good enough!

Here he is enjoying his trike (which now gets used daily!):

Alex loving his new trike

And just in case that wasn’t enough photography, here’s a slideshow from the week with lots more pics:

Stairs and spoons

It’s been a quiet couple of weeks – but thought I should post a few photos as a brief update.  In the past few days, Alex has mastered the art of climbing our stairs and opening cupboards – so the stairgates and cupboard locks are coming into their own!

Time to secure the cupboards

He’s also been having great fun with his childminder.  Because it’s the end of term, all of the clubs and groups she takes the children to have been holding summer parties.  Here’s baby Alex doing the Hokey Cokey with grown up Alex (the daughter of his childminer Jacqui who helps look after the babies every day!):

Alex with one of his childminders, also called Alex!

We’ve mostly been hanging around in Herne Hill – as you saw from the last video post, it was the social event of the local calendar this month – the Lambeth Country Fair!  We went both days because we love it so much and despite the horrendous weather, had a fabulous time!  Alex was treated to a selection of rare breed sheep and pigs, some samba drumming, horse displays, a fun fair to look at and lots more.  And he got to enjoy it with his friend Henry:

Reaching out to Henry

Here’s Henry’s big sister, Phoebe, giving Alex a good tickle:

Tickles from Phoebe

We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon last weekend enjoying the company of friends (and a delicious roast lamb and chocolate cheesecake!) in Blackheath.  Alex enjoyed playing with Emmett’s toys – here they are with Matt:

To close – here’s a comedy pair of photos for the week – it’s Alex successfully feeding himself with a spoon.

Using a spoon himself for the first time!

Making sure he gets everything off the spoon!

We’re off on holiday this weekend (can’t divulge where as it’s a surprise for some of the other holidaymakers…) – but there will be plenty of photos and stories to follow!

A rare video post

So we rarely record videos of Alex, often because we forget, but probably mostly because I hate being in films (ironic given I manage video production in my job!).  But we’ve recorded a few little snippets of Alex recently, so I thought I’d dedicate a post to them.

As I mentioned last week, Alex is standing and starting to cruise – here’s video evidence of his early cruising steps:

And here he is enjoying some splashing in the bath – we’ve had to restrict splashing this week as we’re having our bathroom retiled!

We’ve been trying to get him to drink water from a sippy cup, and yesterday he finally managed to do it himself.  Here I am attempting to get him to do it on camera, without great success:

And finally, and most embarrassingly for me, here he is today at the Lambeth Country Fair dancing with me to some zumba:

Just in case you can’t see those embedded into the blog page, you can also see them on YouTube.

On the move

Sorry the blog’s been a bit quiet – it’s been quite a busy couple of weeks!  Alex is now well and truly on the move, so life is even more exhausting :-).  He’s crawling at high speeds around the house, pulling himself up to standing and just about starting to cruise around furniture.  It’s hard to believe that a month ago we were encouraging him to crawl.

Enjoying music classSo life is certainly more interesting now!  After going to music class with him every week for the past five months, with Alex showing marginal interest in the group, he is suddenly interested in everything there – crawling after the teacher throughout the class, and trying to climb up her legs as she’s singing.  Poor woman.  All the other babies in the class sit with their mummies in a nice semi circle – but here’s Alex up at the front having a great time!

And sleeping is more interesting.  Instead of falling asleep where we put him, Alex now crawls all around his cot and sleeps in ridiculous positions.  And regularly we go in in the morning to find him standing up with a big grin on his face – like this:

Standing

He’s enjoying our massive television quite a bit – watching “In The Night Garden” from about 20cm away – can’t be good for him!  Here he is praying that Murray wins at Wimbledon (sadly this point in the match was where it started going wrong):

Praying for Murray (didn't work!)

Alex’s new found mobility means he’s having even more fun with his childminder.  He had been getting frustrated that he couldn’t keep up with the other children, but now he’s more independent he’s much happier.  Yesterday she took her charges to a local softplay which Alex loved:

And, with the sunny weather last week, Alex could really enjoy all the toys in Jacqui’s garden (check out the dribble!):

Happy standing

Besides the huge breakthroughs this past fortnight in Alex’s mobility, Matt and I made a big step forward of our own – we went away for an afternoon and evening all by ourselves!  For the first time, we left Alex with someone else for dinner, bathtime and bedtime so we could enjoy a Foo Fighters gig in Milton Keynes.  We’ve found a lovely local Australian girl called Jess who’s doing some babysitting for Alex – he loves her and she’s doing a great job of learning his routine so we can get out and about a bit more.  It felt very strange leaving him at 4pm, but it all went smoothly so we’re looking forward to some more dates!

That’s not to say we’re not enjoying spending time with Alex of course!  We’ve had some lovely weekends.  Last weekend we visited Leeds Castle and enjoyed the bird of prey show, the aviary and the adventure playground.  And we spend a glorious Sunday having a leisurely picnic in Dulwich Park with some of our NCT friends and their babies.  It was hilarious watching all the babies stealing each others toys and snacks – they are still a bit too young to really play together so they tend to just crawl over each other.

As I type, we’re halfway through a lovely weekend.  We’ve had Katharine visiting for a couple of days so Alex has enjoyed even more cuddles and playtime – here they are reading together:

So all in all, life is good and busy!  Work is mad so I’m looking forward to a family holiday in three weeks – almost counting down the days!
